Mt Conner 4WD Outback Adventure
What your day looks like
Immerse yourself in the very heart of pastoral life in the Red Centre. Curtin Springs Station is a million-acre, fully operational cattle station owned and operated by the Severin family since 1956, representing genuine Australian pastoral heritage. You’ll venture by 4WD onto private property few have the privilege to experience, embarking on a true Central Australia 4WD experience while discovering the compelling story of this Australian family-owned station. Witness the Severin family’s pioneering spirit, their enduring connection to this land and their innovative methods of outback food production in the desert. Their narrative is interwoven into the very foundation of the station, which they share with visitors as you explore their remarkable rural property—a highlight of any NT outback experience. Travel along vast tracks lined with distinctive red dirt, past cattle grazing across this seemingly harsh landscape. Your SEIT guide will provide insights into station life and the remarkable adaptations that enable survival in this challenging environment, offering a genuine Northern Territory cultural experience. Explore one of the area’s rare outback salt lakes, a breathtaking site, almost a mirage against the red desert, the lake reflecting in the outback sun. Part of the Karinga Creek Paleodrainage system, over 100 saline lakes run between Lake Amadeus to the west and Horseshoe Bend in the east – a system that extends 500 kilometres. A NT Site of Conservation Significance, the salt lakes provide minerals for animals, and the cattle do not require supplementary lick blocks for additional nutrients, as these vast lakes supply what they need in the saltbush that surrounds. You’ll have the opportunity to taste the samphire that grows around the salt lakes, and learn how these hardy plants contribute to the station’s sustainable agricultural practices. End your outback adventure in proximity to the majestic Mt Conner, another NT Site of Conservation Significance. This impressive Red Centre geological formation is more than just a wonder of the NT unique landscapes – it stands as the family headstone for the Severin family, symbolising their enduring legacy in this challenging environment and maintains a constant presence. The Severin family clearly demonstrate how land can be used productively, while maintaining a pristine environmental footprint. With a glass of sparkling wine in hand, you’ll witness the breathtaking spectacle of the Northern Territory sunset experience over the desert’s diverse landscape. The ever-changing colours painting the sky and reflecting off the land create a truly memorable and unique moment – an ideal opportunity for reflection and appreciation of the raw beauty of this place, with no one else around you’ll experience complete solitude as you hear only the desert coming alive at night. Finally, return to Curtin Springs Wayside Inn, where a hearty and delicious outback dinner awaits, completing your authentic station experience in the heart of the Australian outback.
