Itaipu with Wild Animals Eco Retreat and Itaipu Ecomuseum

The journey, in full

The visit starts at the Itaipu Dam Visitor Reception Centre with the screening of a film about Itaipu. Afterward, you will board a bus to see the dam. The route passes through the spillway lookout and includes a stop at the central gazebo, from where you can see the entire dam (approximately 8 km long and 196 meters high). There you will learn about the plant operation and continue on past the dams penstocks. Depending on the plant's operation, the bus can also go over the dam, for a breathtaking view of the Parana River and Foz do Iguau in the background. In the opposite direction, you will see the 1,350km reservoir. After the dam tour will visit the Bela Vista Wild Animals Eco Retreat: a protection unit established to receive thousands of plants and animals displaced by the plant's reservoir. The tour starts in the car, leaving the Visitor Reception Centre and circumvents the Piracema Channel. The tour continues with a 2 km trail walk through the native forest whilst learning about the flora and fuana of the area. The final stop is the Ecomuseum, a great option to learn the history of Itaipu. You will see replica of the turbines as well as a panel of over 4,500 photos dedicated to the workers who helped build the dam.
