Local Flavor. After we reach Payogasta we will continue descending to encounter the magical town of Cachi. Traditional and staid, this village is typical for its colonial-type constructions, old houses lying on the very edge of narrow and cobbled street. Its church dates to the 18th Century and stands out for its floor, ceiling and furniture made of cactus wood and its adobe walls. Cachi has a well-recognized Anthropological Museum where the history of indigenous civilizations is exhibited in 5000 pieces unraveling a 10000-year-old story.

Along this route, after getting the second highest point at 4.080 masl in Abra Blanca, we will reach a great plain which is a prelude to San Antonio de los Cobres: a town asleep in the solitude of the heights, the desert and the Puna.

Salta

Sightseeing at Salinas Grandes. Salt mines We will take the ex-Route 40 for around 90 km northbound and we will finally arrive to a huge salt flat, Salinas Grandes (Jujuy). No urbanization exists and people who work on the salt mines have to spend the night in precarious shelters or travel to the closest villages on a daily basis. We´ll have free time to explore and taking some pictures. Afterwards, we will ascend up to 4,170 masl in Abra de Potrerillos and descend again along the Cuesta de Lipan until we finally arrive in Purmamarca, a small town at the foot of the Seven Colour Hill.
