The Experience
What your day looks like
Our tour begins at the Harrigan Centennial Hall where you'll come aboard a comfortable full-size passenger van. We'll head south on Sitka's road system. Along the way, we might spot bald eagles in the treetops and Sitka Black Tail deer grazing on the brush. We’ll contour Silver Bay, a body of water surrounded by high mountains. In the later months, Humpback and Minke whales can sometimes be seen here. Near the end of the road system, we'll arrive at The Fortress of the Bear. This non-profit rescue facility is home to seven Alaskan bears. Here we'll get up close and personal with our four rescued beautiful Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears and three Black Bears--the only black bears on Baranof Island. Our next stop is The Alaskan Raptor Center. This rehabilitation center for birds of prey has a state of the art flight room and home to multiple rescued Eagles, owls and other birds of prey found in Southeast Alaska. We'll travel to Sitka National Historical Park; this protected area of temperate rain forest stretches out to a peninsula and offers multiple, easily accessible trail loops that contour the Indian river and the Eastern Channel waters. Totem poles punctuate these trails. This park is also the site of a battle between the Sheetka Kwan Kiksadi Clan and Russian American troops, during the 19th century. Our guests can choose to walk through the park or a visit to the park’s amazing cultural center, which offers its own onsite interpreters, as well as exhibits and demonstrations for traditional techniques such as carving, working with fur, beading, and metalworking.

Restrictions
Infant seats are available. Collapsible wheelchairs with removable wheels can be accommodated provided the passenger is accompanied by someone who can assist them board and disembarking. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Meeting & Pickup
Your tour departs from Harrigan Centennial Hall, 330 Harbor Drive in downtown Sitka. There are three ways to get to us if arriving by cruise ship If your ship docks at the terminal north of town (Halibut Point Marine Dock), you will need to disembark your ship and walk to the left side of the terminal building; here you’ll hop on one of the free shuttle buses; these buses will take you directly to our location at Harrigan Centennial Hall (330 Harbor Drive). Here you’ll see a row of tour vendors. Baranof Tours has the blue A-frame sign. If your cruise ship anchors out, you will be tendered to either one of our two ports: 1. Cresent Harbor Port— this is the back side of Harrigan Centennial Hall. You’ll need to come around to the front side of the building. Here you’ll see a row of tour vendors. Baranof Tours has the blue A-frame sign. 2. O’Connell Bridge port You’ll need to walk north bound on Harbor Road, one block, then turn left onto Harbor Drive, walk one block and you’ll see Harrigan Centennial Center (330 Harbor Drive) on the righthand side. Here you’ll see a row of tour vendors. Baranof Tours has a blue A-frame sign.

Our family had a wonderful time on this tour! Mike was an incredibly knowledgeable and personable guide. We especially loved visiting the Raptor Center and Fortress of the Bear. It was amazing to be able to get so close to the animals while learning about their care and conservation. Sitka National Historical Park had beautiful scenery and easy walking trails. Having some free time to split up and explore on our own was a bonus too. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Sitka!

Katie was an amazing guide, very knowledgeable and friendly! The bears were mesmerizing, I could have stayed all day just watching them. The Raptor Center was equally as captivating, we are lucky to live in age where humans care so much about the animals who share our world. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone!

Our tour guide (Mike) was amazing! We loved the stops on this tour despite the rainy, chilly weather. Mike was knowledgeable interesting. I loved seeing the Fortress of the Bears and hearing the story about how it came to be. It was so nice to hear about what the people of Sitka are trying to do to help the bears as well as the injured birds of prey in the area. My only negative was that the van we were traveling in was really too small for a tour of all adults. There were some people on the tour who were completely unable to reach the seats in the back of the van. I am a small adult at 5'3" and could barely climb back there myself. I would suggest putting a couple less people in each van. With rain coats, umbrellas and back packs, it was not very comfortable. Otherwise, it was a great tour!
