The Experience
What your day looks like
Start at sea level then begin the journey skyward! Traverse through rolling countryside, green pastureland and old lava fields. Arrive at Haleakala Crater – approximately 10,000 feet above the ocean! Peruse the Haleakala Visitor Center which showcases cultural & natural history exhibits, books and maps. Walk the Pa Ka’oao Trail (.4 mile round-trip) to observe ancient rock walls, shelters and an outstanding crater view. Drive to Pu’u’ula’ula where we explore the summit and examine the highly endangered, endemic Silversword. Gaze at the horizon, revealing the outer lying islands of Lana’i, Kaho’olawe and Hawai’i (Big Island).Take a stroll through a cloud forest featuring a hundred year old grove cedar, pine, spruce & eucalyptus (.5 mile). Watch for native birds and learn about our native species. Enjoy a light refreshment before returning to our starting point. If you choose the sunset option, then enjoy sweeping landscapes with a birdʻs eye view while Earthʻs closest star descends upon the horizon.

What to Bring
Maui weather is wonderful all year. Shorts and shirts are great most of the time, but at 10,023 feet above ocean level, the climate conditions are a bit different from the rest of the island. And by different, we mean much colder, even in Summer! Temperatures are commonly 40 degrees cooler than the coast. It can be even colder if the wind is up. Hence, be sure to start in pants and a shirt. Bring along with you several layers that you can put on as we ascend the mountain. We recommend a long sleeved shirt, sweatshirt and or light down jacket. Something with a hoodie is ideal. When the wind arrives the cold air can be harsh and strong against the face and ears. Use walking shoes, sneakers or hiking boots. Thick socks will also help keep you warm.
Restrictions
This excursion operates at a high altitude. This may complicate health conditions and cause breathing difficulties. If you have any respiratory or heart conditions, then a doctor’s clearance will be required. Pregnancy must also be disclosed to ensure safety.

We had the very best time. The sights were just beautiful but it was our guide and driver who made the trip extra special! He was very informative about the area and sights and was so kind to offer to take so many amazing pictures of our group. He even fixed my husbands phone when it stopped working and was quick to offer a charger. We plan to return next year and are definitely going to do any tour that he is doing! Thank you for making our stay so memorable!

Our tour guide was Gus. He pointed out many interesting sights and conveyed a great deal of local knowledge on the way to and back from Haleakala, This information was much appreciated and enhanced our tour immensely. The time allotted for each point of interest along the way was perfect, we never felt rushed. He was happy to answer all of our questions as he discussed the various trees, plants, etc. on our walk before going up to the top of Haleakala. His respect for local nature and the environment were clearly evident. We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent on this tour.
