The Experience

What your day looks like

If there’s one thing our guests rave about more than the turtles, it’s our crew. They are the heart and soul of Maui Snorkeling, and they’re the reason a great day on the water becomes an unforgettable one. They are your guides, your hype team, and your friends on the water. From the moment you’re welcomed aboard, you’ll feel their passion. Our crew is made up of engaging, personable, and often hilarious ocean lovers who make it their mission to ensure everyone has a fantastic time. They are masters of the ocean and experts in fun. With years of experience, our captains can read the winds and waves to find the calmest, clearest spots for snorkeling, "saving the day" even when conditions are choppy elsewhere. They are also patient teachers. Whether you’re a nervous first-timer or have kids who need a little extra encouragement, our crew is amazing at helping everyone feel safe and confident in the water. They’ll be right there with you, pointing out the colorful Humuhumunukunukuapua'a (Hawaii's state fish) or a shy octopus hiding in the reef.

The excursion was great. Their communication was simple and helpful before the trip. Parking was a breeze. We noticed a day later it does matter whether there are swells or high tide... as closest parking can get spray (or more) from harbor waves. We were fine on our day. Check-in was simple. They had us take off our footwear which we've noticed is typical for Hawaii boat excursions. They put it in bins and laid them out when we returned. The staff was friendly and welcoming. We went upstairs to get best views and my mom stayed below to stay in shade. As we got out to open water, the captain invited our nearly 8 year old to drive the ship for a few minutes. Our nephew was so happy to sit in the captain chair and be guided by the Captain on what to do. We got some fun photos of that and the captain invited at least one other family to do the same afterwards. When we got to our first stop... "Turtle town" -- it was murky and the captain didn't take too long to bail on that spot and head for the Molokini crater. He gave some information throughout but wasn't TOO talkative or TOO quiet. It was a nice balance of telling us key info as well as interesting information about the sites. The continental breakfast was solid and as described. Nothing to write home about but it was a good snack. When we arrived at the crater... the staff were friendly and efficient. They had us self categorize when to get off the boat. Those that would jump without thinking (I forget his exact words/phrase) would go first. Then the other experienced folks. Then the casual folks and finally the beginners. They gave a 5-10 min beginner session which my wife and I attended. It was super helpful even though I've done this before. They had prescription goggles and everything else you might want. My brother and his family jumped in with the casual folks and started exploring quite quickly. Wife and I jumped in with noodles and because we both used prescription goggles... we saw underwater sights for the first time. That is now a must for us. Molokini Crater was very calm and protected which made moving around super easy and being aware of the various boats was really easy and intuitive. We made the choice to go from the Maalaea harbor so that cut down on some of the snorkeling time but did cut down on our driving time as nearly the whole family are not morning people. Throughout the snorkel time -- the boat photographer was getting shots of us while we were snorkeling. She was an amazing snorkeler and photographer. She got a money shot of my brother's family doing a simple shallow dive towards her. The photo package was a little expensive but the photos were so unique we didn't bat an eye. She was also really good at getting us on the boat and when we weren't even aware. The captain then took us to a third spot which was clear and that's where he setup the slide and gave us time to snorkel as well. Everyone enjoyed the slide -- it was fun for all ages. Snorkeling was good in this location too. Lunch was setup during this time and they had good sandwiches, chips, beverages and a pasta salad. It was all good quality and sufficient quantity for all. Even with kids going back multiple times for sodas and chips. Finally, the ride back was relatively quick from the third spot and they did a good job of asking for a tip (and had venmo option) without being too pushy. They were super patient and considerate of all when disembarking, making sure we had a good start to end experience. The captain gave us a few recommendations of where to eat and what not to miss. We were all exhausted but we loved the experience. Maui is so great that the boat excursion was simply one of the highlights but the photos will make this a treasured memory for years to come.
