Day 3

Hiking at Whian Whian State Conservation Area. Historic Nightcap Track walk - Whian Whian State Conservation Area: After breakfast we head out for the day’s adventure. Today’s walk explore world heritage rainforest along the Historic Nightcap Walking trail. This area is the traditional lands of the Widjabal clan of the Bundjalung Nation which occupied this area over the past 4,000 years. This track also forms part of the old 1840s postman’s track, that ran between Lismore and Murwillumbah and was used by both postal workers and travellers alike. We explore a diverse landscape of wet sclerophyll forest and subtropical and warm temperate rainforests with native animal species thriving in these rainforests including the spotted-tailed quolls, pademelons and potoroos, as well as a variety of birdlife such as king parrots and Albert’s lyrebird. As the trail climb over mountain ranges, it offers spectacular views of the escarpment of Nightcap National Park, Mount Warning and the Tweed Caldera, a bowl-shaped depression caused by the collapse of a volcanic cone which erupted over 20 million years ago and is one of the largest calderas in the world. Alternative day two walk. If the 19km Nightcap Historic Track is a little too much walking for you. We suggest the Goonengerry National park loop walk. 10km along mostly fire trail through dry and wet sclerophyll black butt forests with a side track through rainforest to 2 waterfalls which overlook the Wanganui escarpment.
