From Cardiff: Welsh Castles, Mountains & Steam Railway Day Tour
What your day looks like
Experience the very best of Wales on our Welsh Castles, Mountains and Steam Railway day tour — a carefully curated journey combining mighty medieval fortresses, breathtaking mountain scenery, historic railways, and a charming market town. Departing from Cardiff, the tour begins with a visit to the impressive Caerphilly Castle, the largest castle in Wales and one of the most formidable medieval strongholds in Europe. Surrounded by dramatic water defences and towers, it offers a powerful introduction to Wales’ rich and turbulent past. From here, the landscape opens up as we journey into Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, where a highlight of the day awaits. Enjoy a nostalgic steam train ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway, following part of the historic Brecon and Merthyr line. Travel through woodland, alongside reservoirs, and climb into the foothills of the Welsh mountains, with superb views across open countryside — a memorable blend of heritage, engineering, and scenery. The tour continues to the historic market town of Brecon, beautifully set on the River Usk. Enjoy free time to relax over lunch, stroll along the peaceful canal, or visit Brecon Cathedral, one of Wales’ most tranquil and atmospheric religious sites. In the afternoon, discover Cyfarthfa Castle, a grand 19th-century mansion overlooking Merthyr Tydfil. Once home to the Crawshay family, ironmasters of the Industrial Revolution, the castle now houses a museum and art gallery telling the story of Wales’ industrial, social, and cultural heritage. As we return to Cardiff towards the end of the day take in the views of the iconic Cardiff Castle as we pass by.
