The Experience

What your day looks like

Step into the rugged landscape of the Old West on a professional expedition to witness one of the last truly wild symbols of the American frontier. Located just 25 minutes east of Cody, Wyoming, the McCullough Peaks Wild Horse Management Area offers a raw and beautiful high-desert environment where the rhythm of life is dictated by the seasons and the search for water. Led by an expert naturalist, this safari traverses a landscape of dramatic badlands and expansive sagebrush fields, framed by the distant, snow-capped spires of the Absaroka and Bighorn Mountain Ranges. Our objective is to locate and observe the legendary McCullough Peaks mustang herd, a resilient population of wild horses known for their striking variety of colors, complex social structures, and independent spirit.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

High-Desert Transition: Depart Cody and enter the vast sagebrush steppe. As we navigate the rolling grasslands, we scan for the "ghosts of the desert" pronghorn antelope, coyotes, and sage-grouse. The Search for the Herd: Utilize high-powered optics and expert tracking to locate the mustang family units. Because these horses are free-roaming across thousands of acres, every tour is a genuine scouting mission. Behavioral Observation: Once located, we establish a respectful distance to observe the fascinating social dynamics of the herd. Witness the protective nature of the stallions and the intricate bonds between mares and foals in their untouched habitat. Ancient Waterway Study: Wind along small springs, desert creeks, and ancient watering holes that serve as the lifeblood for the horses and the diverse birdlife of the region, including golden eagles and hawks. Badlands Exploration: Traverse the edges of the colorful, rocky badlands, where the geological history of the Bighorn Basin is etched into the vibrant, striped canyon walls.
