Explore Atlanta, Georgia's capital and a city with a diverse and thriving cultural scene on this private walking tour where you will get the opportunity to discover its most popular highlights, and to walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther King through the heartlands of the Civil Rights Movement. Known as “The Cradle of the Civil Rights Movement,” Atlanta emerged as the epicentre for activism from 1940 to 1970 when it became the cultural catalyst for freedom without discrimination or repression. Black leaders called for voting rights, access to public facilities and institutions, and economic and educational opportunities for African Americans. The civil rights movement had a spiritual home in Atlanta, specifically in the Sweet Auburn district, where the influence of Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife on civil rights history can still be felt to this day. It is here that King first had “his dream” while honing a particularly powerful speech that would have a seismic impact on US race relations. Atlanta is also popular for its cultural and food scene with patios in every neighbourhood, and for being the number 1 filming location for movies and TV shows in the world, like the popular show Stranger Things filmed on the outskirts of Atlanta. You will discover the legacy of the Olympic Games of 1996 by taking a stroll down the Centennial Olympic Park to see its iconic Olympic rings and end your tour with a ride on the Skyview Atlanta Ferris Wheel where you will admire the skyline of the city from above. Sweet Auburn: The national historic landmark district in the historically African-American community was at the center of the Civil Rights Movement in Atlanta. Martin Luther King Jr National Historical Park: The National Historical Park is an immersive experience in Atlanta where guests can explore the life and work of Dr. King, from his birthplace through his legacy in Civil Rights. SCLC: Founded in 1957 by Dr. King and others, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was founded to help centralize the efforts of the Civil Rights Movement throughout the country.

In winter, it is advised to dress in warm clothing.

This was a great experience that helped me to further understand the role of the African American Community in Atlanta in the Civil Rights Movement, and all of the accomplished organizations MLK founded right in the heart of Sweet Auburn that still stands there today. The Eternal Flame and gravesite location of MLK and Coretta Scott King were the highlights of the tour in my opinion!
