The Battery: A Self-Guided Audio Tour from Bowling Green Park to Stone St

The tour begins in Bowling Green Park at the bottom of Broadway. You'll hear how VoiceMap works and how New York got its start. The tour takes you around The Batter. You'll hear how NYC got its start from a humble dirt-walled fort and trading outpost protected by artillery batteries, to the center of one of the most powerful cities on earth. The tour passes by the Korean War Memorial. The monument is called “The Universal Soldier,” a symbolic tribute to all who died or simply disappeared. The tour passes by the American Merchant Marines Memorial. While you walk, you'll hear about how in 1940, German U-Boat submarines secretly entered New York harbor on a daring mission. The tour passes by Castle Clinton, the 19th-century fort. We'll be unearthing the many iterations of Castle Clinton, named after NYC’s most powerful Clinton (neither Bill nor Hillary). The tour passes by the Immigrants statue. On this tour, you'll hear all about the immigrant experience, including Annie Moore, the first immigrant to disembark at Ellis Island’s inspection station. The tour passes by the East Coast Memorial, which honors American servicemen who lost their lives in the Atlantic during World War II. The tour passes by the magical carousel, which was inspired by the memory that Castle Clinton was once the New York Aquarium. The tour passes through Peter Minuit Plaza. Named after the Dutchman who bought the island of Manhattan with wampum. The tour passes by Manhattan’s oldest surviving building, Fraunces Tavern. While you walk, you'll hear some of the amazing things that took place within its walls. The tour ends in front of the cobbled stretch of Stone Street that many lifelong New Yorkers never discover.
