The journey, in full
The tour starts outside of the Dr. Daniel Fisher house, the historic house tells the story of Martha's Vineyard and its whaling story. The tour will then guide you step by step through Edgartown telling you its history. We will stop by many houses as we walk through the streets of this historic town and you'll hear about their hidden stories. These include stories of Jaws, settlers, Native Americans, folklore and legends, ghosts, the underground railroad, and much more. Historical spot downtown that was also the site of the filming for Jaws! Learn about the part of the movie that was filmed here and the story behind why they chose Martha's Vineyard. The tour stops at the church and you'll learn the story of when Frederick Douglas gave a moving speech here and you'll hear about the role the Edgartown played on the underground railroad. We will look at the Giant Pagoda Tree and you'll hear how the ship captain brought it here 150 years ago, how it became part of the town, and the rich people that tried to cut it down. You will walk the dock and hear about the fishing derby that made the island famous, the prizes, and the sharks caught. The Carnegie Library in Edgartown? Learn how it was built here and the story of Patron Saint of Libraries. The tour ends at the lighthouse where you'll hear about the lighthouse, how the island and town got their name, and the native american people that that lived here and their legends.
