Join us on the Keweenaw Copper Country: Scenic Exploration Drive Tour, where we'll uncover the rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Our journey begins at Quincy Mine, a top site to experience the copper mining heritage of the Keweenaw. Known as Old Reliable for its continuous profitability, the mine offers optional underground tours and the chance to see the only cogwheel tram operating in the Midwest. Nearby, we can also visit the ruins of Cliff Mine, the first profitable copper mine in the area, and the historic Delaware Copper Mine, which is even visited by divers. Next, we visit Eagle River Waterfall, one of the Upper Peninsula’s over 300 waterfalls. This picturesque spot is perfect for nature lovers, and we'll provide tips for both long and short hikes to other nearby waterfalls. Our drive continues to The Jampot, a seasonal bakery run by monks in a beautiful woodland monastery. Here, we can indulge in boozy cakes, head-sized muffins, and other delightful treats made from local ingredients. As we follow the shore of Lake Superior, we enjoy stunning views of the largest freshwater lake in the world by area. The beautiful volcanic rock formations and the expanse of sky and water make for endless photo opportunities and perfect spots for beachcombing or swimming on warm days. We then arrive at Eagle Harbor, where we'll explore a charming 150-year-old octagonal lighthouse and museum. This historic site reminds us of Lake Superior's dangerous waters and the vital role lighthouses played in guiding mariners to safety. Continuing our journey, we drive up Brockway Mountain, the highest above-sea-level drive between the Allegheny and Rocky Mountain ranges. The views here are simply breathtaking, and the birdwatching opportunities are fantastic. Our next stop is Copper Harbor, the end of the road on the Keweenaw Peninsula. This quaint town, home to just 150 residents, offers access to beautiful beaches and world-class biking trails. It’s also the launch point for the ferry to Isle Royale National Park, providing endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. We then visit Fort Wilkins, an extraordinarily well-preserved Army fort from 1844. Local history re-enactors share stories of the past. Although the Army built it to keep the peace between miners and Indigenous people, it’s more a testament to the region’s rich history than conflict. Admission is free, but a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Our journey takes us to Estivant Pines, where we'll walk through a grove of pines more than 300 years old and over 125 feet tall. This is the northern equivalent of California’s giant sequoias and a must-see for anyone who loves the great outdoors. Join us as we explore the Keweenaw Copper Country together.
