What travelers are saying
To begin, Starline advertises the buses run every 15, but that buses might be delayed by 15 minutes due to traffic. This is completely false information. We waited at least 30 minutes for each bus and twice we waited over an hour. This meant we were never sure when a bus would actually arrive, which made planning extremely difficult. It also meant that that bus was not a hop on/ hop off as advertised- we didn't feel like we could get off a bus to see a stop as we never knew when the next bus would arrive. Starline claims to have a 'live bus' map as part of their app. I checked this app repeatedly while we were waiting but it often showed no buses at all or one bus that didn't match any of the scheduled times nor when the bus actually arrived. With respect to waiting, none of the stops had any signs so it was difficult to know where to wait. We had to be careful to note where we got off to ensure we knew where to get back on. Moreover, we were waiting in the full sun (in LA!) with nowhere to sit for over an hour. This was unbearable. Lastly, after waiting for a bus for over an hour, we had one experience where the driver stopped twice - once to go to a store and buy chips. The second time to go to the bathroom. While I appreciate drivers need breaks, this was unprofessional and wasted our time (after wasting a lot time waiting). Clearly this was not an actual hop on/hop off experience. It took away from our vacation and significantly impacted what we were able to see and do on the trip. On one occasion I paid for an Uber instead of waiting.
We were visiting for four days, and we bought the three day pass. We didn't even have enough time on our visit to try the purple route! We were so busy with all of the stops on the red and yellow routes. It was very informative, easy to hop-on and off, clean, and had such a wide footprint that it made all of our travel goals easy during our trip. The drivers were AWESOME. They gave us plenty of tips and helped answer our questions on times/drop offs. We happily tipped them each time we got off the bus. The only confusing/frustrating thing was that we were handed the wrong pamphlet/schedule with times the first day by the staff on the street welcoming us. The driver took the time to check with all of the passengers and gave them the correct pamphlet/schedule to make sure everyone knew where and when they were going. I will definitely do this again on future visits! It saved us plenty of money on Lyfts/Ubers, too.
Good information. If you're looking to hop off more, take the earliest reservation.
My clients loved the convenience of this tour and the extensive routes and destinations offered.
