The area is rich with diverse flora, including fynbos and ancient Milkwood forests, along with rocky inlets, caves, and spectacular views across Walker Bay. Gansbaai is also the gateway to Dyer Island, a protected bird sanctuary that hosts a large colony of African Penguins. In the surrounding waters, you'll find an abundance of seals, which in turn makes this area a globally recognized hot spot for great white sharks, earning Gansbaai the title of the Great White Shark Capital of South Africa. The group had a good experience overall. It was windy and the water visibility was terrible, but that is not something that is controllable. The staff did a good job of educating guests and explaining things. The only negative is that they didn’t have a good place to change out of the wetsuit after being in the water. They didn’t want us going down to the bathroom in the wetsuit so our group remained in our wet swim suits until getting off the boat. We were never told where the shower or changing area was back at the welcome center. Supposedly there are hot showers available, but it was not made clear. I guess communication is a little lacking. Improvements could be made in these areas.
