The Experience

What your day looks like

Robben Island is a historic site located off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, known for its use as a political prison during the apartheid era. It is most famous as the place where Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president, was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in captivity. Mandela’s prison cell, a small, austere room, symbolizes resilience and the struggle for freedom and equality. Today, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a powerful reminder of South Africa’s journey to democracy. Bo-Kaap is a vibrant and historic neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa, known for its brightly colored houses, cobblestone streets, and rich cultural heritage. Originally a home for freed slaves and artisans, it is a center of Cape Malay culture, with a unique blend of African, Asian, and European influences. Visitors are drawn to its lively atmosphere, local cuisine, and landmarks like the Auwal Mosque, the oldest mosque in South Africa. The Table Mountain Cableway is a world-famous attraction in Cape Town, South Africa, offering a scenic ride to the top of Table Mountain. The rotating cable cars provide 360° views of the city, ocean, and surrounding landscapes. At the summit, visitors can explore walking trails, enjoy panoramic viewpoints, and relax at the café. It’s a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers.

What travelers are saying

Enoch, my guide for the day, was terrific. Robben Island was closed, so we rearranged the itinerary and drove down the coast to Boulders Beach where I was entertained by the penguins. We had lunch along the way at one of Enoch's favorite restaurants.
