Expert-led Singapore Food Tour: Exploring Hawker Center Culture
What your day looks like
Experience the diverse and flavorful world of Singaporean cuisine on this 3-hour walking tour through the vibrant streets of Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar. Led by a private chef or local expert, you'll journey through the rich history and culinary traditions of Singapore, from its Southern Chinese influences to its modern-day cosmopolitan dishes. We begin our tour in Chinatown with a coffee and traditional kaya toast at a bustling hawker center. Here, our guide will explain the evolution of these centers, which emerged in response to poor street hygiene in the 1800s and have since become national treasures. We’ll explore the interplay of the five major Chinese dialects in Singapore—Cantonese, Hainanese, Hakka, Hokkien, and Teochew—and sample a variety of dishes that showcase the sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami flavors. As we continue, we'll explore Chinatown's vibrant streets, stopping at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the pavilion of birdcages. We'll also have the chance to taste the controversial durian fruit and other local candies. Our next stop is the renowned Maxwell Food Centre, where we’ll compare and contrast the culinary delights we've experienced so far, from Hokkien oyster cakes to Hainanese chicken rice. By the end of our tour, you’ll have a deeper understanding of Singapore’s rich culinary traditions and feel confident navigating the city’s hawker centers. This tour provides an authentic connection to local cultures and offers an engaging exploration of Singapore’s food heritage.

What travelers are saying
A very friendly and nice guide. However the fare chosen really wasn’t that tasty. The two hawker areas selected didn’t seem particularly clean in spite of this being Singapore. Also very expensive for the overall experience.
Our guide was excellent very engaging and knowledgeable.
Aldric was excellent. Contacted us before our trip to explain our day and solicited any wishes. Professional and enthusiastic throughout our trip including being mindful about our comfort walking through the city. Very knowledgeable about the different cuisines and partnering that with Singapore history. And even after the tour, continued to give us guidance about different restaurants and spices to purchase at local supermarkets. Highly recommend this tour!!
