3 Day Akagera National Park Wildlife Safari

What your day looks like

Akagera national park is situated in eastern Rwanda and occupies 2500 sq km of mainly Savannah land. The park is named after the Kagera River that flows along the Tanzania border. The river flows into Lake Ihema and other smaller lakes in and near the park. The park conserves an African Savannah landscape of open grassland and a dozen swampy lakes covered by acacia and shrubs. It has dramatic levels of biodiversity and forms an expansive protected wetland. The park is the only Savannah national park in Rwanda and offers the best experience with large mammals while on safari. Akagera national park is habitat to a variety of wildlife species like the African elephants, Cape buffalos, Rothschild’s giraffe, zebras, leopards, hyenas, lions, Topis, roan antelope and duiker, Oribis, water-buck, klipspringer, impala, and Cape eland, as well as schools of hippos and Nile crocodiles basking in the sun along the shores lake Ihema. And primate species like Vervet monkeys, olive baboons, blue monkeys, and bush babies. Akagera national park is home to over 500 bird species such as the remarkable shoebill, African Wattled Plover, Giant Kingfisher, papyrus Gonolek, African Openbill stock, Grey Crowned Crane, Senegal Lapwings, Squacco Herons, African Darter, Long-toed and Water Thick-knee, Hamerkop, Sacred and Hadada Ibis, Augur Buzzard, Long-crested Eagle, fish eagles, Cattle Egret, Fan-tailed Widowbird and Caruthers Cisticola and Pied Crow, Black-headed and Viellot’s Black Weavers, Grey-backed Fiscals among others. On this safari, we shall have a boat cruise along Lake Ihema, the game drives in the park, and a nature walk around the park. The park is 2 hours drive east of Kigali city. This safari is available throughout the year and starts and ends in Kigali.
