The Experience

What your day looks like

Your day trip from Cluj-Napoca starts in the morning when you meet your tour guide and head to Alba Iulia to discover the city that was once the largest Roman castra and its star-shaped fortification, Alba Carolina. Situated in the heart of Transylvania, this settlement was transformed over time by German and Hungarian populations, enriching its cultural diversity. Because of these influences over the centuries, you will notice that the buildings and churches feature various architectural styles: Baroque, Romanesque, and even Babylonian. Alba Carolina Fortress is surrounded by 12 km of walls designed to protect the city center, which will not fail to amaze you. Originally a Roman fort, it later became a medieval fortress and, eventually, a Vauban-style citadel with seven bastions. Regardless of which entrance you use, you will be impressed by the Baroque decorative elements, considered unique in European military architecture. The sense of history is further enhanced by Austrian guards in traditional uniforms who still protect the citadel today. Rimetea Village Your day trip continues along a scenic road to Rimetea, a small village filled with white houses and charming green windows, preserved and cherished by its inhabitants. You will have lunch here, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Turda Salt Mine Next, you will descend into the world’s largest salt mining history museum, the Turda Salt Mine. Exploitation of the rich deposits began 2,000 years ago under Roman occupation in Dacia. The museum comprises three mines: Terezia, which reaches a depth of 90 meters, followed by Anton and Rudolf, both offering spectacular views. After admiring the huge salt-carved chambers, you will descend to the bottom of the mine to reach the salt lake, where you can enjoy a boat ride. A unique view of the mine can be enjoyed while ascending or descending in the glass elevator. The mine maintains a constant temperature of 10–12°C year-round, with approximately 80% humidity. Beyond being a museum, Salina Turda is also an amusement park, where you can play tennis, mini-golf, ride a Ferris wheel, or take a boat ride on the underground salt lake. Cluj-Napoca After your visit to Turda Salt Mine, the day trip concludes with a transfer back to Cluj-Napoca.
