Arctic Fjord Cruise From Tromsø
What your day looks like
As we leave the city of Tromsø behind us, you will be able to admire the skyline of the third largest city in the Arctic Circle in the morning light. We will set course south to one of the beautiful fjords in the region; Ramfjord. The fjord is characterized by its 90 degrees corner halfway through the fjord. From marine life that flourishes here to the historic cold war facility of Olavsvern, the fjord is rich with stories. As the winter progresses and the climate turns colder, Ramfjord is known to freeze over for a large part. It is not common for fjords to freeze over, as salt water has a lower freezing point. Ramfjord does freeze over as It’s still and narrow and fresh water from multiple rivers and creeks end in the fjord and drifts on top of the ‘heavier’ salt water, allowing it to freeze with a ‘warmer’ temperature than salt water does. Once we leave Ramfjord, we continue to an old fishing facility on the island of Kvaløya. We pass by Ristraumen, a heavy current and a well-known local fishing spot. From here you will have a fantastic view over both Kvaløya as well as Malangen. When we get to the fishing facility, you will step on land and learn more about how important the fishing industry was for the history of northern Norway and still is to this day and how it has shaped families and culture. Our guides will show you the traditional and famous drying racks that are dotted over the Norwegian coast and are used to make ‘stockfish’. Inside, our guides will provide you with a deeper insight into how the fish goes from fjord to plate, and how things have changed throughout history. Afterward you will get to try a little taste of the very products that were produced here and are still being made. Throughout the day our guides & captain will keep an eye out for some of the wildlife that can be spotted during the tour. From white-tailed eagles and other birds to fish. If we're really lucky, we get to see some reindeer. We have binoculars on board that you can borrow for an even better view. If the weather allows we will deploy our underwater drone into the fjord and you can follow the live view of the drone on our screens inside the boat. Our guide will narrate this adventure underwater and give you context to the underwater world of the Norwegian fjords which are filled with interesting things to see.
