Begin your day with a scenic morning drive to the riverside village of Ban Xieng Lom, located along the Nam Khan River. The village sits at the base of a towering mountain and is surrounded by lush countryside and a peaceful natural setting. Upon arrival, cross the Nam Khan River by a small local boat to reach the trekking trailhead. Start your hike through dense jungle toward a mid-mountain Lao Theung (Khmu) village. As you ascend, the forest gradually opens to reveal this secluded community. In the Khmu village, observe daily life as villagers tend crops, weave, and prepare meals. With assistance from your guide, engage in respectful conversations and explore narrow village paths and traditional homes while learning about local customs and lifestyles. After leaving the village, continue trekking deeper into the wilderness. The landscape changes to steep rocky trails surrounded by limestone cliffs, thick jungle vegetation, and ferns. Along the route, encounter villagers traveling to and from nearby markets. Reach the Lao Sung (Hmong) village located high in the mountains. Here, you will be welcomed into a local home to enjoy a simple lunch. Spend time interacting with villagers, listening to cultural stories, and observing daily life in this remote mountain settlement. After lunch, begin the descent, passing through additional small villages and following a gentle stream. Continue until reaching the Nam Khan River, where a short boat ride takes you back to the original crossing point before returning to Luang Prabang. This 17 km (11 mi) trek is rated medium to difficult and typically takes 6–8 hours, depending on trail conditions.
