This 3.5-hour walking tour, led by a historian, takes you beyond the popular shrine to explore the hidden altars, waterfalls, and sub-shrines of Mt. Inari, unveiling the secret story of one of Japan’s most celebrated Shinto deities. Our adventure begins at Sennyuji, a hidden temple connected to Fushimi Inari through a sacred spring and guarded by the spirit of Inari. We then follow a secluded path to Mt. Inari, once a sacred ground for monks and pilgrims. Along the way, we'll learn about ancient Japanese spirituality and the deities believed to reside in the mountain. At the summit, enjoy a panoramic view of southern Kyoto before descending through the famous torii gates to Fushimi Inari Shrine. Our expert guide’s deep knowledge will enhance your understanding of Inari and the significance of Shintoism in Japanese culture. During the tour, we will visit the exterior of Sennyuji Temple and both the exterior and interior of Fushimi Inari Shrine. The tour involves moderate hiking and is not suitable for people with mobility concerns.
