Antigua
Our group meets at the Old Town Outfitters Shop at 14:00 (5th Avenida & 6th Calle – 1 block south from Central Park) to meet our private transport, sort our gear and head out for the trail head. Hikers should eat lunch beforehand and plan for an hour transport to the trail head.
Guatemala City
Hiking at Pacaya Volcano. Pacaya Volcano (8370ft/2552m) may not be Guatemala’s highest peak. However, its slopes and smoldering lava fields are certainly of some of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in all of Central America. Set in its own National Park, Pacaya is a storybook volcano with a continuous plume of smoke drifting from its summit and a massive lava flow reforming the valley at the base of its caldera. As we move up the mountain, our guide will direct the group toward active surface or sub-surface lava flows if any are to be found. No matter what conditions we encounter on the mountain, our group will have the opportunity to traverse unique volcanic-rock landscapes - just a few weeks or months old – as we ascend towards the peak. We’ll undoubtedly encounter geothermal hot-spots on the cooled lava formations – which are always available to help roast marshmallows!
Antigua
At our campsite a freshly prepared dinner will be served and you have ample opportunities to enjoy the sunset views and fiery orange glows which characterize Pacaya’s lava flows after dark. Hot coffee and tea will keep your group warm after sundown.
Antigua
Today After an early breakfast at 7am our group will break camp and descend Pacaya’s slopes to the parking lot and our awaiting transport. A couple hours drive will take us to the village of La Soledad where we’ll set out to tackle our next objective: ACATENANGO.
Antigua
Hiking at Acatenango Volcano. Acatenango volcano has five distinct climatic zones, each of which will take you a little over an hour to traverse. We’ll begin by walking up steep trail through local farm fields - the same trail used by local villagers each morning to access their corn, snow pea and lily fields. Our first hour of hiking will help hikers acclimatize and warm their leg muscles up for the day’s hike. The second phase of our ascent passes through old-growth cloud-forest. In this zone, we find some of Acatenango’s oldest trees, the biggest biodiversity of flora and fauna, fresh clean air and the sounds of local birds and wildlife. This type of high-alpine cloud-forest is found on the upper slopes of many of Guatemala’s tallest volcanoes and mountains, and is home to the famous Quetzal. After exiting the cloud-forest, we will be rewarded with fantastic views Westward of other highland volcanoes (Atitlan, Toliman, San Pedro, Santa Maria, Tajamulco), along with glimpses of the Cuchumatanes Mountain chain. A fresh picnic lunch is prepared around mid-day and about half-way up Acatenango. Temperate coniferous (pine, fur, etc...) cloud forest and dry forest characterize the 3rd phase of our ascent, and it will lead us to the storm-beaten tree-line of the mountain. Areas four and five are characterized by grass lands and high altitude tundra as we push our way up to the summit of Guatemala’s 3rd largest volcano.
Antigua
We will camp at approx. 3,600 meters. with front row seats for any activity that neighboring Volcan de Fuego might want to give us.
Antigua
Today after coffee and a very early breakfast (6:00 am) we will break camp and begin our descent to La Soledad. We will need to move as quickly as possible to meet our awaiting transport which will take us to our next objective, Volcan de San Pedro. The drive will offer up a much needed few hours of rest before we reach Lake Atitlan and shuttle across the lake and up to the trail head of our last volcano.
Panajachel
Hiking at Volcano San Pedro. San Pedro Volcano (3020 meters), our last day hike, is a 3.5-hour ascent to the peak through a coffee plantation and lush cloud-forest. At the peak we arrive to a rocky outcropping that offers up huge views of the lake below.
Antigua
At our camp just below the summit, your guides will prepare yet another yummy dinner to celebrate this amazing and tough expedition.
Antigua
After a leisure breakfast for a change, we’ll pack up the camp for the last time and start our descent back down to lakeside town of San Pedro and meet our boat for the shuttle back across the lake to Panajachel. In “Pana” we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in one of the restaurants before making the journey back to La Antigua.
