The Experience

What your day looks like

Host Bio: Teo is a medical university student and the oldest of seven children. She learned to cook from her mother Tinatin and still uses her grandmother’s recipes. Outside of studying and cooking, Teo teaches skiing, works at a spa and wellness center, and sells her famous wraps and crepes at the Tbilisi flea market. Her activities allow her to meet new people and enable her to constantly learn new things. Teo has a big family - she lives with parents and six siblings. You can usually find Teo in the kitchen preparing a big meal for them. Join Teo and her mother Tinatin in their modest, family home to experience Georgian cuisine - a melting pot of a variety of flavors and new ingredients that you may never have tasted before. You may even get to meet her siblings but if not you will still see their artistic scribbles on the walls! "I love hosting people from different countries and showing them the best part of my city, which I love very much!" On days that Teo is not in town, her mother Tinatin will host you.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Meal Description: Teo and her family live in a traditional Georgian two-story brick home with a decorated metal gate in the Vake neighborhood. After entering the leafy inner courtyard, you will go up one flight of stairs to the main living and kitchen area. There is a breezy balcony looking over the courtyard with views of the green hills behind the house and Mtatsminda Park in the distance. The home was built in 1961 and exudes warmth and love. It is modestly furnished in a traditional style - filled with books, antiques, maps, and artwork created by the family (her younger sister is an artist). Traces of the family history can be seen throughout their home, from photo collages to paintings on the walls. You will be greeted warmly with smiles from Teo, her mother, and her siblings (if they are around). Teo (or her mother when Teo is not available) will serve a traditional Georgian meal from the Lechkhumi and Samegrelo region where her parents grew up. A few dishes that you may taste at Teo’s dining table are, fresh tomato and cucumber salad, chakhokhbili (stewed chicken with fresh herbs), khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) and sulguni and imereti (Georgian cheese) and also best of Georgian kitchen- Khinkali(Georgian dumpling). Your meal will conclude with the sweet churchkhela, a traditional candy made by repeatedly dipping a long string of nuts in tatara – a mixture of flour, sugar, and badagi (concentrated grape juice). Cooking Description: Teo offers a hands-on cooking experience - you will get to cook along with her in her kitchen. You will learn to make 2-3 dishes such as lobio (a traditional Georgian medley of beans), chakhokhbili (stewed chicken with fresh herbs) and khachapuri (cheese-filled bread). Teo will share the recipes and preparation method throughout the cooking process so be ready to take a lot of notes! Your class will last about an hour and a half after which you will join Teo at the dining table to share the meal you helped prepare. Market Tour Description: Teo will take you to the local market, a 10-minute drive from her home. If you would like to walk, it will take about 30 minutes and Teo will be happy to guide you through the many interesting lanes en route to the market. This traditional food market is stocked with fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, meats, and other groceries. Discover regional produce as Teo gives you a tour of this local market - you may even purchase a few fresh ingredients that you will use in your cooking class. Please note that the host offers multiple tour options combining the activities described above. Your tour itinerary will be determined by the combo option you select when booking your tour.
