What your day looks like
Explore a millennium of belief, warfare, and power in this epic history of the peoples and cultures that conquered and created Northumbria. Start at the forts of Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolanda, where our guide leads an in-depth tour of the excavated sites, their artefacts, and the profound reshaping of the Celtic north by the Roman Empire. At Lindisfarne Priory and Bamburgh Castle on day two, we journey to the twin centres of religious and political power in the Anglo-Saxon world, continuing the story of Christianity from the state religion of a dying empire to the legitimising force behind Northumbrian kingship. Finally, Durham Cathedral and Newcastle Castle offer superb architectural evidence of the world-shattering arrival of the Normans, with William the Conqueror and his aristocracy permanently transforming the social, cultural, and political fabric of England.

Housesteads Roman Fort: Day one takes you back to the Roman North-East through the outstanding archaeology of excavated Roman forts adjoining Hadrian's Wall. Historians and archaeologists explain the wall’s construction and function while guiding visitors through the organisation, layout, and artefacts that reveal the lives, beliefs, and cultures of the soldiers stationed there.

This French-style fortress was built by the heirs of William the Conqueror in the late eleventh century to defend against local resistance and symbolize Norman authority.
