Small Group Roman & Anglo-Saxon Tyneside Shore Excursion
What your day looks like
South Shields and Jarrow contain fantastic history from before the Romans and are vibrant towns in the North East of England. This tour will tell you the story of the Roman Fort of Arbeia - the supply base for Hadrian's Wall and the Anglo-Saxon story of the North East through Jarrow Hall. Arbeia Roman Fort was stationed with soldiers from modern-day France and Iraq, as well as many other locations. At Arbeia you can see the stories of both soldiers and civilians - with dedications to middle eastern traders, slaves, and native Britons all living together at this frontier. At Jarrow Hall, the story of the Germanic Anglo-Saxons is told through the museum dedicated to the Venerable Bede. Bede is arguably the greatest scholar of the dark ages, not simply being a monk but also a teacher, scientist, and historian in a time most believe to be violent, uneducated, and unrecorded. Both sites have fantastic reconstructions of buildings from their periods with a Roman gatehouse, barracks block, and commanding officer's house. At Jarrow hall, the buildings are based upon archaeology from Yeavering which was the capital of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria. As a part of the tour, you will be able to experience these.
