Private Expert-led Oxford Pub History Walk
What your day looks like
Beneath Oxford’s spires and scholarly traditions lies a different kind of history—one brewed in its pubs. On this late afternoon walking tour, you’ll explore centuries of drinking culture, from medieval brawls and Shakespearean performances to the quiet corners where Tolkien and C.S. Lewis shared drafts of both beer and novels. Your guide, a historian deeply connected to the city, will take you into the heart of Oxford’s public houses, tracing their evolution and role in shaping the social fabric of town and gown alike. This isn’t a standard pub crawl; it’s an engaging, story-rich journey through the city’s hidden corners, with a pint (or a non-alcoholic alternative) in hand. By the end, you’ll not only understand Oxford better—you’ll feel like you’ve lived part of it. The tour begins at The Bear, where you'll view its necktie collection and learn about Oxford's early drinking traditions. You'll continue past medieval lanes and into former coaching inns, including one where Shakespeare performed. You’ll visit the Turf Tavern and, if space allows, pause for a drink. Next is the King’s Arms, followed by possible stops at nearby pubs like the Lamb and Flag. While the Eagle and Child remains closed for renovation, its legacy is discussed nearby. Depending on timing, the tour may conclude near the Jericho neighborhood. Some interior pub visits are included; drinks are optional and not included in the tour price. The following add-ons are always included for each guest: Pub History of Oxford, Tasting Fee.
