Along the way, you’ll explore stories of coded language, underground gatherings, bold activism, and shifting public opinion—all through the lives of figures like Oscar Wilde, Alan Turing, Virginia Woolf, and the many unsung individuals who pushed boundaries in private and public spaces alike. Led by a scholar with expertise in LGBTQ+ history, this walk is designed to deepen your understanding of how London’s queer communities have shaped—and continue to shape—the character of the city. The tour begins in Trafalgar Square and continues on foot through central London. You will view the exterior of a major 1980s gay club, the Oscar Wilde memorial, and sites along Piccadilly connected to historic queer figures such as Beau Brummell and the Duke of Buckingham. Passing through Chinatown, you’ll discuss 20th-century gay life using archival sources like Joe Orton’s diaries, before concluding in Soho with a visit to a local LGBTQ+ venue.
