The Experience

What your day looks like

Day Trip from London to the historic city of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital and most popular tourist destination. Optional overnight stay. The train from London's King Cross Station arrives at the Royal City of Edinburgh at around 11.30am. Right by the station, you board the open-top sightseeing bus where you'll get a bird's eye view of this majestic city! The hop-on-hop-off ticket allows you the freedom to leave and re-join the bus as often as you like. You will see the Old Town quarter, the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre, the gloriously intricate Scott Monument, the Palace of Holyrood House and the brand new Scottish Parliament building. You might want to wander through the cobbled city center streets or stroll along Princes Street checking out the tartan, whiskey, and shortbreads that have made Scotland famous! Your tour includes tickets to Edinburgh Castle. The train back to London leaves Edinburgh in the late afternoon returning to London's King's Cross.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Welcome to Edinburgh Fondly known as Auld Reekie, which means 'Old Smokey' in Scots, the Scottish capital is one of the most memorable and unique cities in all of Europe. A sense of history is around every corner and under your feet of this beautiful city. Underground vaults and hidden passageways, relics of construction from a bygone era, are located in and around its historic town centre, known as 'Old Town'. Visitors and locals pack the narrow cobbled alleyways of Old Town, the medieval heart of Edinburgh filled with centuries-old buildings. Explore the traditional pubs, charming stores and casual eateries that line the 'Royal Mile', a historic street cutting through the middle of Old Town, and visit St Giles' Cathedral, the 900-year old religious focal point of the city. Climb Calton Hill for sweeping panoramic views of the Edinburgh skyline and beyond, or visit the mighty Edinburgh Castle, a 1,100-year-old fortress built on Castle Rock, a long-extinct volcano. Explore the long, bloody history of the castle, from its time as a military fortress, royal residence and prison of war. Walk in the footsteps of famous Scottish kings and queens as you ascend castle hill, and see the Stone of Destiny, also known as the Stone of Scone. For centuries, this sacred object has been used in the coronation of Scottish, and later British, monarchs.

Lovely experience in Edinburgh! It was very nice to have the opportunity to see this beautiful city for the day while staying in London. The hop on and off option was perfect and allowed us to see the city ant our own pace. We enjoyed the narration available on the bus with the provided headphones. We just wish there was a later departure train as we would’ve loved a little more Time!

I think it was a pretty good value for what we spent. Included rail tickets, Castel tickets, and hop on/off bus. I wish the description made it clear that the rail was 5 hrs each way. The time went by fairly quickly, but it cut into our time there. We did not arrive until after 12 pm and had to be back at the train station by 6 pm. Since we only had 6 hrs to sightsee we only did the Edinburgh castle, one round trip of the hop on/off bus, and walked the Royal Mile to find something to eat. We went into a couple of shops near the train station but we had no time to see anything else. I enjoyed the visit and am glad I went but I probably wouldn't do it again unless staying at least 1 full night and leaving the following evening.
