What your day looks like
Since pre-history Bamburgh and Lindisfarne have had human settlements. As a fortress of the Kingdom of Northumbria Bamburgh was the center of the largest Kingdom in England during the 7th and 8th centuries. In the middle ages, the Castle developed as an important fortress against Scottish attack - eventually developing into the impressive fortification you see today. Lindisfarne is famous for both the Lindisfarne Gospels and being one of the first locations in the United Kingdom to be attacked by the Vikings. It is called the cradle of English Christianity due to the importance of the monastery in the dark ages. Due to the tides, the tour may go to Lindisfarne at different times to enable safe crossing and return to the mainland. The Village of Bamburgh will also be included in the tour with the remains of the monastery and St. Aiden’s Church both being sights to visit.

Bamburgh Castle: Bamburgh has been inhabited since the stone age with its prominent rocky outcrop being a prime location for people to settle to provide a defense. It was the fortress of the Kings of Northumbria who lived and resided at it as their capital. Following the Norman Invasion, a Castle has stood on the site. Lindisfarne Priory: Lindisfarne began as the Celtic island called Medcaut. The Irish mission to Northumbria from Iona chose it as the site of their monastery and there was a famous mixing of Irish and Anglo-Saxon Art on the island. The monastery was attacked by the Viking raid in 793AD that was said to be the trigger of the Viking age. The current ruins of the Priory were built in the middle ages and gave the island its famous name: Holy Island.

Alex is an excellent and enthusiastic tour guide with an abundance of information . The journey to Bamburgh and Lindisfarne up the coast along the North Sea is beautiful. Bamburgh castle is lovely, and Alex gave a very thorough history. Lindisfarne is also beautiful and interesting. We thoroughly enjoyed our day. We enjoyed walking amongst the ruins.
