Newcastle Central Station Location: Newcastle Central Station Here we bring to life the achievements of steam pioneers George Stephenson and Robert Stephenson, whose engineering innovations transformed transport and industry. 5. Swing Bridge Location: Swing Bridge At the Swing Bridge, learn about the work of genius engineer William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong and the technological transformations that reshaped the North-East. 6. Gibside Location: Gibside At neo-classical Gibside, we meet the wives and daughters of powerful industrialists whose pursuit of social status and rejection of tradition negotiated a new era. Here we enter the world of Mary Eleanor Bowes, builder of the Orangery and an eccentric early pioneer in women’s equality. Having made their fortune in mining, the nouveau riche Bowes family used the grand family rooms, now in ruins, and chapel as theatres of social performance, making strategic marriages with the older gentry and aristocracy. Together, these stories recreate a city transformed not only by technological invention but also by the social revolutions that accompanied progress. Alternative option – Bowes Museum (not part of the standard itinerary) Location: The Bowes Museum A French-style château nestled in the rural setting of Barnard Castle. It holds an unrivalled collection of clothing, interiors, portraits, and scientific marvels dating from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, including its famous seventeenth-century mechanical Swan. Alternative option – Wallington (not part of the standard itinerary) Location: Wallington Hall Located in the picturesque village of Cambo, this outstanding stately home is surrounded by walled gardens and woodland rich with flora and fauna, including birds and other wildlife. Its vast collection includes ceramics and paintings, and neo-classical Georgian architecture designed by Daniel Garrett. Alternative option – Howick Hall (not part of the standard itinerary) Location: Howick Hall This hall was once the home of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey and features landscaped gardens and an arboretum. Alternative option – Seaton Delaval Hall (not part of the standard itinerary) Location: Seaton Delaval Hall This baroque masterpiece was designed by eighteenth-century playwright, political radical, and architect John Vanbrugh. A key pioneer of the style in England, Vanbrugh also designed iconic stately homes including Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard.
