The Experience

What your day looks like

This is a must-do tour for all visitors. Dubrovnik leaves most people speechless, and the reason is not only the view. For more than four centuries this was one of the smallest and wealthiest republics in Europe and it survived without a standing army. The Republic of Ragusa paid tribute to the Ottoman Sultan, kept terms with Venice, Spain and the Pope, and ran some fifty consulates across the Mediterranean from a city of a few thousand people. Better to negotiate for a hundred years, the thinking went, than to fight for one. That strategy bought time, and time bought everything else: Europe's first quarantine law in 1377, the abolition of the slave trade in 1416, and the art and architecture you will walk through today.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Entering through Pile Gate, you will see the Franciscan Monastery, Onofrio's Fountain, and the Rector's Palace. You'll hear some of the fascinating stories and remarkable facts from around 1,400 years of Dubrovnik's history, including the period of the Republic of Ragusa and the Yugoslav Wars. On the city tour, you will be able to see and discover all the highlights of Dubrovnik's Old Town. On the main square, we will enjoy a view of Sponza Palace, the Baroque church of St Blaise, and the most photographed monument, Orlando's Column. In the Old Port, we will tell you all about the quarantine, protected by the fortresses of St John and Revelin. You'll learn about sea trade and shipbuilding. Inside information on favourable bars, restaurants, and shopping is included. We will also discuss politics, food, the Homeland War, sport, and the film industry that made Dubrovnik even more famous (Game of Thrones, Star Wars VII, The Borgias, James Bond…). Did you know that Dubrovnik was proclaimed the most romantic city in the world in 2014? Find out which celebrities got married here! Every summer the Old Town becomes the open-air stage for the summer festival and Shakespeare's plays are performed on these fortresses, cloisters, and terraces.
