Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Popularly called Laguna de Hule or “Rubber Lagoon”, this beautiful lagoon of 55 hectares (136 acres) in diameter is located at the base of the Cerro Congo Volcano about 11 linear km (7 mi) from the crater of the Poas Volcano. This site is known for its excellent trekking and hiking trails with different types of scenery and terrains ranging from land, to clay, volcanic rock, and pasture in a forest located at approximately 800 m (2625 ft) above sea level. We will leave from La Fortuna around 7:30 am and travel for an hour and thirty minutes through the San Carlos plains and the outskirts of the Juan Castro Blanco National Park. Once we arrive to Laguna de Hule, we will prepare to set out on our expedition to the volcanic lagoons. We will begin by crossing the pasture area bordering the volcanic caldera and during our descent we will pass through the rainforest and have excellent views of the primary and secondary lagoons. The route consists of 8 kilometers (5 mi) circuit trail where we will visit the 3 volcanic lagoons that many years ago formed a single volcanic crater. After this intense and incredible 3 to 4-hour journey in the rainforest, we will get to enjoy a delicious lunch in the home of a local Costa Rican family before the drive back to La Fortuna.
