The Experience

What your day looks like

On this journey you will visit with us the Nemocón Salt Mine, we will pick you up at your hotel or place of accommodation and we will leave for the municipality of Nemocón, the journey can last approximately 60 to 90 minutes. During this journey, we have the opportunity to observe different places such as the northern highway in the city of Bogotá, passing by the Marroquín Castle and the town of Chía. Descend into an underground wonderland where 196 feet (60 m) occur below the earth's surface. A private guide accompanies you to the Nemocón salt mines during a half-day educational tour to discover the history of the mines and their impressive brine mirrors. After arriving in Nemocón, we will make our way into the mines with a private guide who will be happy to share the history of the extraction process. Inside the mine, glimpses of stalactites and stalagmites from another world are complemented by colorful atmospheric lighting. Be amazed as you head into a region where brine deposits have created a natural network of reflective mirrors. A place that captivates for its authenticity is the Nemocón Salt Mine, which it reaches in 30 minutes from Zipaquirá.   There, 80 m underground, travelers search 1,600 m of tunnels through which between 1816 and 1968 approximately eight million tons of salt were extracted. The 28 brine mirrors, in which the salt rocks dissolve, produce an impressive optical effect. In the chamber of the Chapel, there is a huge 1,300 kilogram stone sphere that symbolizes the world. Another attraction of great importance is the 1,600-kilogram salt crystal, cut in the shape of a heart in the 1960s by the miner Miguel Sánchez. Stalactites and stalagmites are seen along the way and there is even an ecological trail, an auditorium, and a geology room. You will know the curiosities about the Nemocón salt mines and you will discover the salt extraction industry dating back to 400 BC in this region of the world. You will see the filming location of the movie "Los 33", which details the collapse in 2010 of a copper and gold mine in Chile, starring Antonio Banderas, later than you will enjoy a delicious lunch in Nemocón before your unforgettable excursion has taken place.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Chia: Chía or Chíe is the denomination in the religion and mythology of the pre-Columbian Colombia of the moon and which they venerated as a goddess, being considered as the wife of the sun or Sué (Zhúa); she was the symbol of worldly pleasures, being the protector of fun, dance, and the arts. Nemocon: Nemocón was the place chosen by the Zipas to launch their moans, their religious cries, and their hymns of sadness in ritual form. The first church that Nemocón had was built where the Departmental College stands today. The current one, according to the Cura Copybook, began to be built in 1780. Nemocon Salt Mine: The origin of the mine dates back 350 million years ago when the sea that flooded the Cundiboyacense savanna dried up. The salt was mixed with clays and limestones and large deposits were generated. From Bogotá, the journey takes one hour and 45 minutes.
