The journey, in full
As per your scheduled tour pickup time, please meet your guide in the lobby of your hotel in Zhengzhou to kick off your day. Your first stop will be the Shaolin Temple, a journey that will take approximately 1.5 hours by private car. The Shaolin Temple, established in 495 AD by Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty for the Indian monk Batuo, holds a rich history. It was here that Indian scriptures were translated into Chinese, shaping the precepts of Zen Buddhism. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Song, one of China's five sacred mountains, the temple has evolved over the centuries. Many of the current structures date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, showcasing the temple's architectural beauty. Explore the various halls and courtyards of the temple, and don't miss the Pagoda Forest, a collection of tomb pagodas for esteemed monks and abbots. With over 240 tomb pagodas from different dynasties, it is the largest pagoda forest in China. Witness a captivating Kungfu performance by Shaolin monks at the theater, immersing yourself in the rich history and culture of the temple. After a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, your next destination will be the Longmen Grottoes, approximately a 1.5-hour drive away. These grottoes and niches house an impressive collection of Chinese art from the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties, dedicated entirely to Buddhism. The intricate stone carvings represent the pinnacle of Chinese stone carving artistry. As the tour concludes, you will be transported back to your hotel in Zhengzhou, or you may choose to end your journey in Luoyang.
