Talking Trees: A Stanley Park Eco Tour
What your day looks like
Join a guided nature walk to discover how Indigenous peoples have respectfully and sustainably utilized the land for food, medicine, and technology for thousands of years. Every plant and tree holds meaning, purpose, and knowledge passed down through generations. As you move through forest and shoreline landscapes, you’ll begin to see the environment not just as scenery, but as a living classroom filled with cultural teachings and practical wisdom. On this immersive walking tour, you will hear the stories of how the shíshálh (Sechelt) Coast Salish and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Peoples have cared for and depended on the land since time immemorial. Your Talaysay Cultural Ambassador guide shares ecological practices, ancient and contemporary history, legends, and Indigenous ways of knowing. Through storytelling and hands-on learning, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the enduring relationship between people and place, and how traditional knowledge continues to guide life today.

The journey, in full
Our tour begins at the Stanley Park Bus Loop, located near the Stanley Park Pavilion and Vancouver Aquarium, where guests can easily arrive by public transit, taxi, or private vehicle. From here, we’ll take a short, gentle walk into the forest to reach Beaver Lake, a serene oasis surrounded by towering cedars, maples, and hemlocks. The Beaver Lake Loop Trail is a well-maintained gravel path with moderate inclines and benches along the way, making it suitable for most participants, including families and guests with varying mobility levels. We recommend sturdy walking shoes and dressing for the weather, as the trail can be damp in shaded areas. As we circle the lake, you’ll experience the quiet rhythm of the forest, learn about its ecological and cultural significance, and discover how this special place has been cared for and sustained by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.
