Spoken Treasures: Indigenous Cultural Walking Tour In Stanley Park
What your day looks like
A historical walking tour through an Indigenous lens, offering a meaningful perspective on the land, people, and stories that shape this place. Long before modern cities emerged, these territories have been home to Coast Salish Peoples for thousands of years. This tour invites you to step beyond traditional history and explore the living connection between past and present, guided by Indigenous knowledge, values, and ways of understanding the world. This experience highlights unique Indigenous stories, oral traditions, and community perspectives on early contact with explorers, traders, and settlers, as well as the impacts that followed. Through your Talaysay Cultural Ambassador, you’ll hear how Coast Salish Peoples navigated change while maintaining culture, language, and identity. Alongside historic moments, the tour also shares present-day life within the host Nations’ communities, creating a richer, more complete understanding of Indigenous history as something living, resilient, and continuing today.
The experience, in brief
- Indigenous histories and lived experiences shared through an Indigenous lens
- Precontact life, colonization, and ongoing resilience as a living story
- Listening, reflection, and responsibility rooted in reciprocity
- Closing with Indigenous tea and shared dialogue
The journey, in full
We begin our Spoken Treasures walk at the Stanley Park Information Booth, a gathering point just steps from the entrance to the park. From here, we follow the Seawall toward the Totem Poles (Pápiyuḵ Village), tracing a shoreline where generations have gathered, traded, and shared stories. The tour concludes at the totem poles, a powerful space to reflect on the histories and continuities of Pápiyuḵ Village. This route offers guests a quiet, reflective walk through one of Vancouver’s most iconic landscapes, a place where culture, land, and memory are deeply intertwined.
