The Experience

What your day looks like

A food tour is the kind of experience that changes the way you see a city and lets you know its real essence. Gastown is where Vancouver began, and the streets your clients will walk through tell the story of a city that burned to the ground in 1886 and rebuilt itself into one of Canada's most distinctive eating destinations. An expert local guide leads small groups of up to 12 through the spots that locals actually eat at — places that have earned their place over decades, not just a good review. The food reflects the neighbourhood's character. A slow-roasted pork sandwich in the oven since the night before, carved to order on ciabatta with house salsa verde — one of the most replicated sandwiches in Canada, and the original is right here. Classic Scotch eggs seasoned in-house, served in a pub in the same building since 1910. The Crack Bar from a bakery that started at the Whistler Farmers' Market and grew to eight BC locations: shortbread, salted caramel, dark chocolate. And our Secret Dish, revealed only on the day. Menu varies by departure. The 10am tour is built for the morning: Vancouver's most beloved hand-made donut, fried fresh daily since 1979, and fermented veggie toast on sourdough baked that morning with hummus and pickled vegetables made entirely in-house. The 12pm and 4pm tours add a chicken taco from one of Gastown's most consistent kitchens, and house-made artisan chocolate from a small local producer. Quality drinks included at select stops.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

You'll start with one of the most talked-about sandwiches in Canada: slow-roasted pork that's been in the oven since the night before, carved to order on ciabatta with house salsa verde. From there, your guide takes you deeper into Gastown's streets, sharing the history of the neighbourhood between every stop. The city's origins, the Great Fire of 1886, and the characters who shaped what you're walking through today. Next, a pub that's been in the same building since 1910, serving Scotch eggs seasoned in-house the same way they always have. Your guide will tell you what it took for a place like this to survive in a neighbourhood that has changed as much as Gastown has. The 12pm and 4pm tours continue with a chicken taco at one of Gastown's most consistent spots, followed by house-made artisan chocolate from a small local producer. The 10am tour takes a different path: Vancouver's most beloved hand-made donut, fried fresh and glazed by hand since 1979, then fermented veggie toast on sourdough baked that morning, with hummus and pickled vegetables made entirely in-house. Every tour closes with the Crack Bar: shortbread, salted caramel, dark chocolate, from a bakery that started at the Whistler Farmers' Market and now has eight locations across BC, and our Secret Dish, which your guide reveals only when you arrive.

Our tour guide Andrew was great, enthusiastic and informative. (Only reason it is a 3 instead of a 2). Unfortunately we were not crazy about the tasting selections. One was vegan, and we barely touched food. Another was Sushi. While the Sushi was delicious, due to restaurant capacity we were not allowed in, and had to taste in a park. Ruins the ambiance. We purchased the optional Drink Package for $30.00 US. We received 2 cocktails, not of our choice and neither were very good. Other people in tour did not have drink package and were able to order drinks ala carte, and got what they want. If you opt for this tour, DO NOT purchase this option.
