The Experience

What your day looks like

Get a taste of contemporary Mayan cultural at the village of San Antonio, where a group of women will share their traditional ways of cooking and their practice of making clay pots. San Antonio is a small village located in a very beautiful area that is surrounded by mountains. It was a group of Yucatec Mayas that settled here in the mid-nineteen hundreds, as they were running away from the war of races. One of the reasons for settling in such an area was because they were farmers and they loved the fertile soil here.

At a Glance

The experience, in brief

  • Learn about Mayan culture first hand
  • Observe and get involved with food preparation
  • Try your hand at making clay pots in the clay factory
  • Finish the day at the 80 ft high waterfall, Big Rock Falls
Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Upon arrival, you will be given a demonstration on how they prepare food over the fire. Depending what they are preparing for lunch, we are able to participate in the preparation. After the kitchen demonstration, we visit their clay factory. The making of pottery is an important part of the community because several families are involved in the process. We get to put our hands on the clay, so we can come up with our own design. One of the women is in charge of showing us the traditional way of making pots using the coiling method, a method that was used by the ancient Mayas. After we finish with our lunch we get to drive to the Mountain Pine Ridge and end the day swimming at Big Rock Falls.
