The Experience

What your day looks like

Host Bio: Deja is a warm and dynamic Bahamian chef with a deep love for food, travel, and hospitality. She trained at the Culinary Institute of America in New York and has worked in many restaurants in the US and the Bahamas. She now runs her own catering business and food truck, sharing the rich culinary traditions of her homeland. For Deja, food is a way of bringing people together - just as her father did, cooking big pots of curry and soup for friends and family. She now works at the Ministry of Tourism, helping to promote Bahamian culinary traditions. If you’d like a private chef experience in your residence or vacation rental, Deja offers exclusive dining/cooking experiences any evening at 6 PM or all day on weekends. Cooking Class Description: Join Deja, a passionate Executive Chef, for a private, hands-on Bahamian cooking class in the outdoor courtyard of Hillside House, a charming art gallery in downtown Nassau. Begin with a refreshing drink and crispy conch fritters before donning Batik aprons for your interactive, 3-hour cooking class held in a beautiful outdoor courtyard. You'll prepare a traditional Sunday dinner feast, featuring fresh local fish, peas ‘n’ rice, fried plantains, and personalized garlic macaroni ‘n’ cheese. End on a sweet note with a homemade guava or pineapple tartlet. This experience blends hands-on cooking with live demonstrations, offering insight into Bahamian flavors and culinary traditions. You’ll also learn to cut a mango or peel a seasonal guinep, a tropical fruit similar to lychee, freshly picked from Deja's backyard. Leave with recipes, new skills, and lasting memories. Feel free to view the local art in the gallery after your experience. The price of your experience includes a cocktail! Chef Deja accommodates vegetarians, as well as lactose-free and gluten-free diets. If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, please inform her when booking.
