Tihany Abbey Originally founded by King Andrew I of Hungary in 1055, the church seen today was built atop the original site in 1754. Amazingly, the medieval crypt where King Andrew was buried was left completely undisturbed, and now his tomb is the only extant grave of a medieval King of Hungary. The church interior is an exercise in Baroque excellence, with intricately carved altars, pulpits, and screens made by an Austrian lay brother named Sebastian Stuhlhof. Stuhlhof is also responsible for the magnificent choir rail and the cherub-covered organ. The abbey also has a small museum where you can learn about its historical importance, like how the charter is the oldest example of writing in the Hungarian language. As an added bonus, the abbey's hilltop position offers some of the best views of Lake Balaton. Balatonfuered Balatonfuered’s reputation as the capital of Lake Balaton’s north shore dates back to 1772 when it was officially declared a spa. The naturally carbonated springs waters that can be drawn from wells here have been attracting visitors from around the world ever since, with Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore coming here for treatment. A beautiful waterfront promenade was named in honor of the poet, offering beautiful views of the lake. Throughout the village itself, you can find 18th and 19th century buildings, including several mansions built by Hungarian nobility. The classicist Lajos Kossuth Spring House is a key stop on any visit, both for its elegant architecture, and for a chance to drink the famous mineral water. *Optional third party activities such as tours or attraction fees are not included in the price.
