Under Prince Johann II it was reconstructed as a museum exhibiting sculptures and valuable reliefs from his collection. The architects were scrupulous in preserving and enhancing the castle’s original Romanesque fabric, with such success that today it’s regarded as one of the rarest and best-preserved examples of a secular Romanesque building in Europe. And for once one can believe the architectural hype. Great beamed ceilings, thick original walls, delicately capped towers, the ornamental variety of its highly elevated interior spaces divided by restful softly rounded arches, the sensuous drama of the castle’s pillared main staircase. The castle’s chapel is a particular delight, a consecrated, still-functioning space built by Liechtenstein’s founder in 1130, with special significance thanks to a red chalk image, or ‘sanguine,’ depicting the Crucifixion with Mary and St John. Graz Graz is often overlooked as most visitors head for Vienna, but makes an ideal destination for a stop by, particularly with the abundance of attractions on offer in the Old Town, where everything is located close together and easily manageable. Escape from reality by wandering the well-kept cobblestones of the pedestrianized streets packed with secret courtyards and alleyways that belong to another world. The food stalls tease the senses with delicious smells while the colorful restaurants and cafes all contribute to the atmosphere of an ancient quarter alive with modern-day people. Known for its friendliness and hospitality, there are few places in Europe that can rival the Old Town in full swing. Graz doesn’t feel like a typical tourist destination as the Old Town is transformed by both visitors and locals to generate a pulsating, vibrant, and historical experience that few cities of this size can equal. *Optional third party activities such as tours or attraction fees are not included in the price.
