Private Drive: Trip Klosterneuburg and Kreuzenstein from Vienna
What your day looks like
Klosterneuburg Famed in Austria for its quality of life, the charming Viennese forest community of Klosterneuburg has developed into a high-end cultural and recreational retreat. Set above the town is Klosterneuburg Monastery, comprised of spectacular buildings that span six centuries. These include one of the most beautiful abbey churches in Europe, which features the famous golden Verduner altar panels, regarded as a true masterpiece. While the exquisite architecture and the well-preserved buildings are pure eye-candy for history buffs, the interiors of the buildings can also be explored. There are three tours available — the sacral tour of the interiors, the abbey and the museum. When combined with the stunning location, 900 years of pre-Hapsburg Austrian history and the wine tasting that is freely available in the nearby vineyards, cellars, and wine shops then time spent in Klosterneuburg makes for an invaluable experience no visitor is likely to forget in a hurry. Kreuzenstein It was rebuilt in the late 19th century by Count Johann Wilczek in a completely different style but incorporating parts of its Romanesque-Gothic ruins and importing medieval furnishings and artifacts from all over Europe. Although the discerning eye can 'see the join' between the medieval and 19th-century additions, Kreuzenstein is a wonderfully absorbing place to visit. The Armoury consists of one of the largest private collections of weapons in Austria, while the Chapel is a magnificent example of medieval craftsmanship. Perhaps the most impressive being the Gothic altarpiece made from 47 original 15th-century wooden shields and plates. The Knights' Hall, with its furniture and tapestries, gives an intimate sense of the daily life of the men in shining armor during their golden age, and even more so the Prince's Room with its 500-year old bed complete with 'dream-board' for recording dreams and a secret compartment for stashing jewels. *Optional third party activities such as tours or attraction fees are not included in the price. What travelers are saying
For us, we didn't really enjoy Klosterneuburg so much. The views from there were great, though. We LOVED Kreuzenstein Castle!!! Definitely one of the highlights of our whole vacation. Our driver was awesome and we had him join us on the tour of the castle.
