The journey, in full
Be picked up from your hotel or the ferry terminal at 9 am by your expert host in a luxury vehicle with bottled water, local treats, and in-car wi-fi. Make your way across the Derwent River and get to know your host on a relaxing, hour-long drive to Tasmania's east coast. Grab a coffee and pastry in Triabunna before boarding the 10:30 am ferry to Maria Island. This is a passenger ferry as vehicles are not permitted on the island, helping to preserve this pristine national park and its abundant wildlife. Once on Maria, your host will choose from a number of stunning short walks or more challenging hiking to suit. The itinerary will avoid the crowds and maximize your chance to see native wildlife and the islands many sweeping bays, natural cliffs, and mountains. If you've opted for a picnic lunch, your host will arrange a meal of delicious Tasmanian fare and hot tea or coffee in a beautiful and secluded natural setting. Before heading back to the mainland, visit the ruins of one of Australia's earliest convict settlements and hear fascinating tales from the islands early colonial history. While you may like to dedicate the entire day to Maria, the journey back from Triabunna to Hobart passes through the Coal River Valley, one of Tasmania's leading wine and produce regions. As this is a private tour, you can spend your afternoon meeting local distillers, winemakers and farmers and enjoying tutored tastings - and best of all, you can decide on the day! While the exact order of the day may change according to the season, conditions and your preferences, your host will have you back safe and sound in Hobart by 6 pm.
