The journey, in full
Be picked up from your hotel at 10 am by your expert host for a morning (or afternoon) explore Hobart on foot, getting acquainted with the city through the eyes of a well-informed and connected local host. Wander the historic backstreets and waterfront area of Salamanca and Battery Point. Learn about the city’s humble beginnings and fascinating convict heritage as well as its rapid rise and recent acclaim as a major culinary and cultural destination. Stop in for a pastry and coffee in one of our favorite local bakeries. Chat with local makers about Hobart’s emergent dining scene and the recent journey from conservatism to creativity. Walk the historic boulevards of downtown, passing through local markets (on market days) and stunning urban gardens. Admire street art, independent retail, and plenty of stunning Victorian architecture. Take an optional stroll through the archives of the Tasmanian Museum for some insight into the island’s unique native fauna and the impact of its earliest industries. The exhibition about the ‘Black War’ between early colonists and the native Palawa/Pakana Aboriginal communities tells a harrowing and important story no visitor should miss. Return to your hotel by 1 pm or have your host leave you somewhere wonderful and local for lunch.
