The journey, in full
1. Pickup and drive north Your guide picks you up from your accommodation or meets you at the self-drive point before a scenic 15 to 20 minute drive north to the Mossman River through rainforest and cane country. 2. Arrival and gear fitting At the river, you are fitted with river boots and offered a thermal top or wetsuit year-round, with lightweight thermal tops preferred during the warmer months. Your guide runs through safety, river conditions for the day, and what you can expect to see along the river. 3. Guided river walk upstream The experience begins with an interpretive walk upstream, using the shallow or sometimes dry riverbed as your path. You learn how the river shapes the landscape while spotting freshwater fish, birdlife, and signs of animals along the banks. 4. Rainforest and river insights Walking beneath the canopy, your guide shares insights into rainforest plants, river ecology, and how rivers were traditionally used for travel and resources. 5. Transition to the drift You move to a new section of the river where you are introduced to your river sled and shown how to control your speed and position in the water. 6. River drifting at varied pace The river’s speed changes with the seasons, creating a mix of mostly easy flowing sections with occasional faster channels. You glide through calm water, with time to lay back, float, and look up at the rainforest canopy as it passes overhead. 7. Final drift and return walk The drift finishes downstream, followed by a short, easy walk back to the starting point with wide river views and time to reflect on the journey. 8. Refreshments and return You dry off, enjoy light snacks and water, then are driven back to your original pickup point with a deeper appreciation of the Mossman River and its rainforest environment.
