Boxing Day Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race Cruise on Fantasea Avalon
What your day looks like
Experience the emotional and high-stakes departure of one of the world's most grueling blue-water classics with the Sydney to Hobart: Avalon Farewell Expedition. On Boxing Day (December 26, 2026), this specialized cruise transitions from the competitive roar of the starting line to a poignant offshore pursuit. Utilizing the Fantasea Avalon, a high-speed catamaran with two levels of expansive viewing decks, you will have a front-row seat to the fleet's final sprint toward the Sydney Heads. This expedition is specifically dedicated to "working back through the fleet," providing friends and family a final opportunity to wave farewell to their loved ones as they begin their 628-nautical-mile journey to Tasmania.
The experience, in brief
- Watch the race start from Watsons Bay on Sydney Harbour
- Follow the leaders down the coast, and farewell the fleet
- Licensed bar on board
- BYO food welcome
- Ocean cruise component (weather dependent)
The journey, in full
Strategic Positioning (Watsons Bay): Depart from the city and head toward the mouth of the harbour. We secure a prime vantage point near Watsons Bay, ideally located to witness the 1:00 PM start as the yachts reach their top speeds before exiting the harbour. The Starting Surge: Witness the explosive start of the race. Watch as the 100-foot supermaxis and the smaller "Corinthian" entries navigate the spectator-crowded waters, creating a forest of sails against the backdrop of the iconic Sydney skyline. The "Fleet-Back" Maneuver: After passing the Sydney Heads, the Avalon moves offshore (weather permitting). We actively attempt to track and identify boats further back in the fleet, allowing family members and supporters to spot and salute their specific sailors. Offshore Follow: Travel alongside the fleet for a portion of their coastal transit. Witness the tactical transition from harbour racing to ocean survival as the yachts meet the rolling swells of the Pacific. Return Transit: Enjoy a relaxing return journey to the city, sharing the excitement of the start with fellow maritime enthusiasts as you head back to the wharf.
