The Experience

What your day looks like

Once you have completed your PADI Open Water Course, the next step is to select the PADI Advanced Open Water Program. The good news is that there are no formal classroom sessions with this PADI course. The only academic work required is to read the relevant chapters in the PADI Adventures in Diving Manual and complete the knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter. You will need a minimum of two days and one night to complete your PADI Advanced Open Water Course, but you can also stretch the fun out on a multi-night liveaboard trip. This page is for those who are focusing on obtaining just their Advanced Open Water. If you wish to spend more time exploring the Great Barrier Reef aboard our luxury liveaboard OceanQuest, our liveaboard booking system offers the PADI Advanced Course as an optional extra that can be added to any Liveaboard Trip (select only the advanced option as this will include your certified dives) If you can't find the information you need, please feel free to contact us directly. Our reservations team is available 24 hours by telephone. If you prefer to use email, we endeavor to reply within 24 hours whenever possible.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Day 1: Cairns' city accommodation* collection, pick up is at 7.30 am. We check you in at the Dive Shop, check your certification card, and start on the paperwork for the Advanced. (If you have any belongings that require storage during your night at sea, Deep Sea does have facilities for storage, although baggage is left at your own risk; simply have them with you at pick up). Once you are checked in we will head down to the Marina to our transfer vessel, SeaQuest On the 90 min trip out to the reef you will receive a safety briefing as well as a Dive Briefing for your pleasure dives. Once we arrive at the reef you will get in for the first of your two pleasure dives on the transfer vessel. Tropical Lunch Buffet is served with a selection of salads, cold cuts, and fruit. Complimentary tea, coffee, and water is also available. After lunch, it is time for your second dive. At 2:30, we will begin transfers to the Liveaboard vessel and your home away from home for the next couple of days In the afternoon, you will have your first training dive and your first step to gaining your advanced certification. This will usually be Peak Performance Buoyancy or PPB. This dive will help fine-tune your breathing control and your buoyancy skills in the water Time now to catch up on your reading before the 2nd dive of the course. Dinner is served on board and is prepared fresh every day by one of our talented chefs. After dinner, it is time for the second dive of the course as we teach you the art of successful Night Dives. Time to unwind and debrief. Day 2: Wake up to the glorious Great Barrier Reef and hit the ground running with your Deep Dive of the Advanced Course. This dive gives you a chance to experience life below 18m. By now, you should be ravenous so it's time for the Breakfast Buffet, once again prepared by our onboard chef After Breakfast, we will test you and expand on your skills from your Open Water course with a Navigation Dive. Which way was North again.....? For the final dive of your course, you will have discussed the options already and you will have chosen an elective dive such as Fish ID (it's always nice to know what you are looking at!) or maybe Boat Diver (you should be an expert at this by now!) After your final set of skills, you will now officially be an AOW Diver (Advanced Open Water) Time for a fabulous Lunch buffet prepared by our Rock Star Chef. After Lunch, we jump in for a pleasure dive before we spend the afternoon unwinding. Dinner time and another freshly prepared delight. Final dive of the day, and now it's time to show us what you're made of as you navigate your way through your first Night Dive. Time to debrief and take it easy with three more dives to look forward to. Day 3: Good Morning GBR nothing like an early morning dive to get the juices flowing! Breakfast as usual with all the trimmings. Time for another 2 pleasure dives this morning, and time to practice all those newly acquired skills! Sadly now we must pack up and leave, but not before one last awesome meal made with love by our chef. At 2:30, we will begin transfers to the SeaQuest for our 90min trip back to Cairns. Once back at the marina we will transfer you to the shop to collect any stored luggage before dropping you off at your Cairns City accommodation.
