Hiking at Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch. Great Ocean Road: From here, we transfer to the Great Ocean Road with short stops along the way at Anglesea and Apollo Bay, before arriving at Parker River. Our first walk takes us to Point Franklin and Crayfish Bay. Crayfish Bay offers beautiful vistas and rock ledges hiding clear salt-water pools and is often used for snorkelling and spear-fishing activities. The area used to house some beach shacks, occupied by local fishermen, but these were removed when the area became part of the National Park. This section of the Great Ocean Walk mostly follows the cliff line and affords superb views of the ocean where the foliage clears; we may also see koalas relaxing in the trees. The track is gently undulating, with a firm, sandy surface, interspersed with some sets of wooden steps/staircases.

Eco Tour at Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch. Great Ocean Road: This morning, enjoy breakfast, before setting out on our day’s walk, which will be the most challenging of the tour. We will depart the lodge at 830am to enable an early start on the trail. You will see spectacular and isolated areas of the Great Ocean Walk, traversing from Milanesia Gate to Moonlight Head on an undulating trail that is usually compact and stable. We begin surrounded by beautiful coastal forest as we trend downhill to the isolated tranquility of Milanesia Beach, where a short wander along the sand brings us to our first climb for the day – a steady ascent on a firm track with several sets of steps. The trail continues to undulate on a generally stable surface for the full journey, dissected by gullies, featuring Rough Tree Ferns and other lush flora, as well as drier sclerophyll forests. Our climbs regularly afford us spectacular views along the coast in both directions. An ascent of 138 steps and an additional small climb brings us to one of the official GOW campsites at Ryans Den. Typically our lunch spot, this high point provides an expansive outlook of our surrounds, and the chance to recharge our batteries for the 2nd half of today’s walk. We mostly follow the coastline from here, heading west toward Cape Volney and beyond, alternating between high points and shady gullies, with a final stepped climb to emerge onto Moonlight Head, where we can celebrate our achievements with incredible views once again.

Eco Tour at The Twelve Apostles (Victoria). Gibson’s Steps / 12 Apostles: After breakfast, we depart from the accommodation at 8:30am and drive a short distance west for our final walking experience of the tour: Princetown to Gibson’s Steps/12 Apostles. This dramatically beautiful final section of the walk is a fitting finale to our 3-days, starting on boardwalk that crosses the pristine wetlands of the Gellibrand River, which supports extensive bird and aquatic life. The trail winds through coastal scrub and follows the cliff tops on varying surfaces of compacted earth or board-walked path, providing fabulous views. The spectacular vistas ultimately include the famous Apostles, rising majestically from the Southern Ocean. Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs over millions of years, the rugged splendor of these ancient sea-stacks is striking to the eye. At Gibson’s Steps, we descend approximately 50 man-made steps to the beach to view the stunning limestone cliffs from below. We also experience a closer view of the impressive sea-stacks of Gog and Magog, not strictly included as Apostles, but worth a look, all the same.
