The Experience

What your day looks like

In our 3-hour Fileteado tour, you’ll discover the art of Fileteado and how to make your own pieces of art! What is this Fileteado, I hear you ask? It is a unique local style of lettering which revolutionized the Buenos Aires of the early 20th Century when Italian immigrants introduced new shades, shapes and styles of decoration into their painting of cars. Emerging as part of Argentine culture along with the tango, Fileteado quickly became a symbol of Argentine identity, which we want to make you a part of on this tour. Nowadays it is known as Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad, a name given by UNESCO.

Detailed Itinerary

The journey, in full

Your experience begins at a place steeped in history: the corner of El Federal, one of the city's most emblematic historic bars. With a stunning fileteado mural as your backdrop, your guide will open the door to this fascinating world, introducing you to the symbols, techniques, and meaning behind the swirling strokes. From there, you'll set off on a walking tour through San Telmo, one of Buenos Aires' oldest and most atmospheric neighborhoods. As you stroll its charming streets, you’ll discover how this beloved art form continues to shape the character of the city. You'll pass by hidden gems and iconic spots, admiring work from renowned masters and hearing the stories behind each flourish. Along the way, you’ll visit the historic Church of San Pedro González Telmo, home to several stunning pieces by Martiniano Arce, a legend of fileteado art. The route also takes you through the famous San Telmo Market, a bustling hub of culture, flavors, and tradition. But this isn’t just about observing—you’ll also get hands-on! After your walk, you’ll sit down for a classic Buenos Aires-style afternoon snack—coffee or tea and medialunas—as a professional fileteadora leads a private workshop just for your group. You’ll learn how to trace and paint your own fileteado design, using authentic materials and techniques. At the end of the session, you’ll take your finished piece home, along with a certificate of participation to remember your creative journey.
